February Englewood Parent Teacher Club Meeting

The meeting was called
to order by Mary Hanson.
Board Members and Event Coordinators in Attendance: President, Mary Hanson, Vice President, Michelle Russell; Treasurer, Jodi Blackman; Secretary, Ruby McClorey; Volunteer Coordinator, Connie Dewey; Co-volunteer Coordinator, Amy Sargent; Box Tops Coordinator; Lora Dougherty; Fundraising Coordinator, Michelle Lewis; FFN Calk-walk Coordinator, Kim Keady; 5th Grade Recognition Coordinator, Priscilla Tilgner; Staff Appreciation Co-Coordinators, Ruby McClorey and Bethany Wachtler; SMART Coordinator; Kurt Haas; Englewood Staff, Jeff Lutz, Liz Tardif, and Annette Cridge; and Principal, Gary Etchemendy.
TEACHER
CLASSROOM PRESENTATION - Mr. Lutz 2nd grade class:
- The students recited a poem about the solar system, and showed a
smart board presentation about earth, the moon, and the sun, with related vocabulary.
INTRODUCTIONS:
- Everyone introduced themselves and shared what grades their children are in.
PRINCIPAL REPORT - Mr. Etchemendy:
- Principal Etchemendy reported out newsletter went home
today.
- McTeacher Night was a success and made $1,326.00 and
the money will be used to purchase books. (More $ than the last 3 years)
- Box Top campaign goes until the 21st and winning
classes will receive parties. The contest has already help collect over 4500 Box Tops, in just 4 weeks. 1 week left to go.
- There will also be an OMSI assembly February 21st.
- The Artist in Residence did come to Englewood and
classes made a variety of ceramic art projects, rattles and other items.
- OAKS (Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills)
Testing will begin for 3-5 grades sometime after spring break and
Englewood will have 45 days to complete the tests after they begin.
Each test takes 1-2 hours. This will be the first and last
time for 3rd graders as the testing will change next year and the OAKS
test will not be utilized.
- There was some talk about being able to re-introduce
some programming due to budget being able to afford to do this and
Principal Etchemendy was wondering if parents had any preferences what
they would like to see this money used for to restore anything and the
general consensus was to spend extra money on Technology first, Librarian,
Counselor. Class size was brought up but it was explained the cost
of that for the benefit may not be the best option.
Treasurer's Report -Jodi Blackman:
- Budget update and Jodi also reported the recent writing
night was a success. Kids and Parents really enjoyed it.
- Recap of
Winter Fest was it was successful.
- We have already met our budget
forecast for this year and it is only February. Basically, we rock.
Presentation on Salem Eco-School Network- Liz Tardif:
- Liz spoke about this Eco-School Network she had
recently attended and was hoping to get suggestions/volunteers to join her
in this endeavor of making Englewood even more Green!
- Lisa Martin-Baker and Liz Tardif already spend their
time with Englewood recycling and getting input from kids on earth
friendly ideas the kids have already given lots of feedback on what they
would like to do and have been working towards this goal.
- Liz asked anyone interested in volunteering or
has any ideas or questions to contact her. Please see attached flyer
for more information.

Current Business:
- There will be an up and coming Science Night (hosted by A.C. Gilbert's Discovery Village) on the 2/26 6:00 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., volunteers needed to help with the science table stations.
- Carl's Jr. is hosting a Family and Friends night for Englewood, donation 25% of the profits. 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students can volunteer. Carl's Jr. Night info
- Mary discussed Family Fun night. Still need
Volunteers for set-up and decorating for the event the night before (April
3rd) or the Day of April 4th 2014. Next planning meeting will be on
February 20th. The theme will be Western Round up. Volunteers
will receive 10 tickets to spend at FFN. Family Fun Night Info
- May 5th (Cinco de Mayo) will kick off Spring Book Fair.
The Book Fair will run May 5-9, before and after school. As well as a
Parent's BBQ Lunch & Book Fair Browse ~ Monday, May 5, at regular

- Staff Appreciation week will also be May 5-9 and some
secret squirrel items were discussed that cannot be included in these
minutes for homeland security and so they don’t know what we are going to
do for them but if anyone has any suggestions please let the committee
know. After FFN, Ruby McClorey will send an email around to get that
planning underway.
- 5th Grade Graduation - Priscilla Tilgner: Reported she
will be coordinating 5th grade recognition and was wondering how last year
was and was looking for any suggestions. It was discussed that the
5th grade moms and teachers come up with the concept and planning,
decorating, etc. and the 4th grade parents handle the event itself so the
5th grade parents can enjoy the recognition ceremony.
- School will be extended two days due to recent school
closures. Last day will be June 12th, 2014.
- PTC Board member openings will be up and coming and the
nomination process has changed. Nominees will be voted in. Info on PTC Board Nominations
